Deane has trekked to Everest Base Camp, and climbed Kala Patthar (18,200) twice — in 1977 and again in 1980. He completed the Long Trail in 1974 and the Appalachian Trail in 2008. In 2012 he trekked to Machu Picchu via the Salkentay Trail.

In 1982 Deane climbed all three Mexican volcanoes: Ixtaccihuatl (17,200), Popcatepeti (17,800), and Orizaba (18,500). He also climbed Aconcagua (22,800) in Argentina in 1984; Husacaran (22,400) in Peru in 1985; Mt. Columbia (12,500) and Edith Cavell (11,000) in Alberta in 1991; and Mt. Logan (19,500) in 1992.

An avid rock climber, Deane climbed the east face of Mt. Whitney, East Buttress of Middle Cathedral Rock, the North Face of Fairview Dome, and multiple climbing routes on the Shawangunks in New York. In New Hampshire, he has made multiple climbs on Cannon, Cathedral, and Whitehorse cliffs.
